What is a pre-employment medical?

A pre-employment medical is a health assessment conducted by a qualified medical professional to determine an individual’s fitness for a specific job or role. It often includes a physical examination, a health history review, and possibly some functional tests.

Why do employers require pre-employment medicals?

Employers require these assessments to ensure that potential employees are physically and mentally fit to perform their job duties safely and effectively, to reduce workplace injury risks, and to comply with occupational health and safety regulations.

What does a pre-employment medical examination include?

The examination typically includes:

  • Medical history review
  • Physical examination
  • Vision and hearing tests
  • Drug and alcohol testing (if applicable)
  • Skin checks
  • Blood Pressure, Height and Weight measurements
  • Functional assessments related to the job requirements

Do I need to prepare for the medical examination?

Yes. You should:

  • Bring any relevant medical records and/or current prescriptions.
  • Inform the doctor about any ongoing medical conditions or medications.
  • Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs for a specified period before testing
    (if applicable).
  • Wear comfortable clothing, especially if physical assessments are
    involved.
  • Bring with you a current form of government-issued ID.

How long does a pre-employment medical take?

The duration of the medical examination can vary but typically lasts between 45
to 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of the assessment required.

What if I have a medical condition?

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, it’s essential to disclose this during the examination. Our doctors will assess whether it affects your ability to perform the job and may provide recommendations or conditions.

Is the medical examination confidential?

Any information disclosed to your potential employee will only be done with
your consent. If you are concerned about what information may be disclosed,
please read your consent form and discuss any concerns with the clinic staff.

What happens if I fail the pre-employment medical?

Knight Health does not determine if a candidate “fails or passes” a medical. As an entity, Knight Health does not form part of the recruitment process. We conduct a medical assessment and make recommendations – on your ability to safely perform the inherent duties of your role.

How often are pre-employment medicals conducted?

Pre-employment medicals are typically conducted only once before starting a
new job, but some employers may require periodic assessments for specific roles or industries.

Can I access my medical record?

Yes – under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), you can request access to the medical information we hold about you at all times. We will assess your request and take action accordingly.

How long do results take?

Depending on the medical you have undertaken, and if there are any
complexities, a standard medical should be finalised and sent to your potential employer within one business day. If additional testing is required, the results of your medical assessment cannot be released until all information is received.
